Cyprus with an area of 9251 square kilometres, is located 70 km south of Turkey, 965 km southeast of Greece, 110 km west of Syria and 520 km north of Egypt. In terms of surface landforms, the Island of Cyprus is an extension of the Taurus Mountains in southern Anatolia, Scientific research has revealed that the Island is connected to Anatolia by a submarine platform a few hundred metres below sea level. The mountains and plains in the Hatay province of Turkey emerge from the sea in Cyprus and continue with the same characteristics. The Besparmak Mountains (meaning "five finger mountains") named after the appearance of the five hills, stretch along the northern shores of the island. This 160 km long mountain range constitutes the most southern section of the large Alp-Himalaya chain of mountains in the eastern Mediterranean.. |
